Set up your eBird account and app, then follow these steps to log birding details, enter species, and submit accurate checklists that contribute to the global bird database.

Steps

  1. Sign up for an eBird account and download the free eBird Mobile app for iOS or Android devices. eBird recommends taking the free, self-paced eBird Essentials course to get a better understanding of the system.
  2. Use the 'Find it on a Map' feature to input your birding location. If the spot isn't visible, start by entering a county, state, or province. The app uses GPS to track your location, which helps ensure accuracy and avoids misreporting.
  3. Record the date, time, distance traveled, and duration of the birding session. Choose an activity type: traveling, stationary, or incidental. For stationary and traveling checklists, mark whether you recorded all species you could identify as 'Complete' or 'Incomplete'.
  4. Commonly observed species are pre-populated in the system. Use the 'Show Rarities' and '+ Add Species' features to log other birds. You can also add detailed observation data, such as breeding codes, for enhanced accuracy.
  5. Submit the checklist within 60 minutes to avoid time-outs. You can save progress and return later. In the app, review the checklist details and finalize the location before submission.
  6. Edit any submitted checklist at any time through the 'Manage My Checklists' feature. Your data joins a global database of over 850 million observations.

Notes

Check for specific project requirements before submitting. Audubon Foundation Texas requires users to enter a duration of 5 minutes and specify if feeders or nest boxes are present in the comments.

Why it works

Data quality and conservation

Accurate location, observation details, and species lists are crucial for research and conservation efforts. Precise data ensures the information is useful for science.
