Keeping feeders clean keeps birds healthy by stopping mold and bacteria that spread diseases like salmonella and trichomoniasis. Research shows some folks suggest cleaning every two weeks, while others say four times a year is enough, so it's best to check often and adjust based on weather or visitor traffic. For seed feeders, a soak and scrub does the trick. Hummingbird feeders need fresh sugar water twice a week and a weekly wash.

What you need

Steps

  1. Sweep up spilled seeds and hulls around the feeder monthly to keep the ground tidy.
  2. Disassemble seed feeders and soak each section in a 10% bleach solution or hydrogen peroxide for 10 minutes. Some sources recommend a 1-to-10 bleach solution, so pick the ratio you prefer. Scrub every part with a sponge or brush, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely before reassembling. Check for sharp objects that could harm birds and remove them.
  3. Clean seed feeders at least every two weeks. Wash more often during rainy weather, when many birds visit, or if dead birds are nearby. Note that some guidance suggests cleaning four times a year or each time you fill, so you can adjust the frequency based on how busy your feeders get.
  4. Refill hummingbird feeders with fresh sugar water twice a week. Clean once a week using a 4-to-1 vinegar and water solution and a scrub brush. If you use bleach for these feeders, rinse thoroughly before adding new nectar.

Notes

Bleach strength varies between a 10% solution and a 1-to-10 ratio; choose one method and stay consistent. Hummingbird cleaning advice is mostly aligned on weekly washing with vinegar.

Why it works

Why Clean Regularly

Cleaning prevents the growth of mold and bacteria that can harm birds. It helps reduce the spread of diseases such as salmonella, trichomoniasis, salmonellosis, aspergillosis, and avian pox. Thorough cleaning removes debris and contaminants that harbor pathogens. Keeping the feeder area clean also discourages rodents and insects.
